USC Recognizes Speech and Debate Team

The Township of Upper St. Clair issued a Certificate of Achievement to the Upper St. Clair High School Speech and Debate Team for placing first in the Speech Sweepstakes at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League State Tournament. In addition, the Township issued an official proclamation congratulating Maddie Nolen, a member of the speech and debate team, for placing first in the humorous interpretation category at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League State Tournament.

Commissioner Pamela L. Enck presented representatives from the team with the certificate. The team also placed third in the Debate Sweepstakes, second overall and won the District #3 Championship for the 10th straight year.

Coach Ben Edwards thanked the Township for the recognition, "We had to make a lot of adjustments this year (due to COVID restrictions), but we still had a number of kids participate and we took the largest team yet to the state competition, despite this year's challenges."

Commissioner Dante R. Plutko, Jr. presented Maddie Nolen with the proclamation. Miss Nolen's 10-minute encapsulation of scenes from "Beetlejuice" defeated four other state finalists.

The Upper St. Clair High School senior is also an accomplished trumpet player and vocalist, who will be performing in the high school's spring musical "Smokey Joe's Cafe."
