South Hills Partnership With Parents
A community coalition dedicated to strengthening families, schools and communities Back to School Parenting Tips
- Encourage your child to got involved in school and church activities. It helps them with socialization skills and in structuring their study time.
- Set clear and realistic expectations with each child regarding their academic performance.
- Talk to your children about their daily school routine and most importantly LISTEN to what they say.
- Help your child develop, a positive attitude toward school work. Read "The Little Engine That Could" and talk about the engine's attitude and success. (Yes, older children can relate to this story.)
- Guide your children through homework, projects, and social situations. Resist the temptation to do it for them.
- Do not rely on the school to be a parent. Establish a partnership with your child's teacher, and let your child know you are a team supporting him or her.
- Encourage participation in church and community activities. It helps children get outside themselves and focus on the opportunities they enjoy.
- Do not prevent the natural consequences your child receives for misbehavior outside the home. They will learn quickly if you let them.
- Remember, youth "connectedness" to family and school is one of the greatest protectors against at-risk behavior.
- Network with other parents, recognize that parents are the single, most influential people in a child's life. Be a role-model every day.
