Community Day

Community Day 2011 - Saturday May 21

Upper St. Clair Community Day, which has been held on a Saturday in May since 1979, is cooperative effort of the Upper St. Clair School District, Upper St. Clair Township Government, students, parent volunteers, community groups, and various businesses and professional organizations. There is always a parade and food and fun and quite often rain!

The following groups and people make up the Community Day Steering Committee:

  • Township Recreation Director
  • High School Student Activities Director
  • Parent Committee Heads (working through the PTAs)
  • PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization at the High School)
  • High School Student Council
  • Township Superintendent of Public Works

The Recreation Director serves as a liaison between the Township and School District and helps to coordinate all facets of Community Day. Township services such as Police, Fire, Public Works are also vital in putting this event together.

The first Community Day meeting is held in early February. There are approximately 8 meetings, all of which are held at the High School so that student leaders and committee heads can attend. From its inception, Community Day has relied on the talents and involvement of the Upper St. Clair High School Student Council who are responsible for chairing many Community Day Committees, working in conjunction with the High School Student Activities Director.

The School District provides buses during the day to transport people from the parking facilities to the activities area. The Township helps the students put up the booths and stores the wood frames throughout the year. The Activities Director works with the students and parents to coordinate all major games and activities. Community businesses and organizations donate special prizes and materials, as well as participating in the Fair Booths by selling food and drinks. Bands from outside the Township are encouraged to participate in the Community Day Parade along with the Upper St. Clair High School Band. Student musical groups perform from a platform near the Fair Booths to provide day-long entertainment. Games are planned for children of all ages and Senior Citizens participate with special activities, including bingo. Everyone is involved in the cleanup. The entire day is truly a collaborative effort.
