Sanitary Sewers
Sanitary sewers are underground pipes which carry human and household waste matter from toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, dishwashers, washing machines and garage floor drains. From lateral sewer pipe lines on a homeowners property, the sewage flows into larger main lines and trunk lines. The Township's responsibility is to move the sewage to connecting pipes so that it can be treated by ALCOSAN.
Please Note: Most homeowner's insurance policies do not automatically include coverage for sewer-related damage expenses. If a sewer backup should occur there is potential for significant loss. It is advisable for homeowners served by a public sewer system, particularly those with finished basements, to obtain some level of coverage.
Sometimes sanitary sewers also carry unwanted groundwater that enters through cracks in the sewers. This water should not be in the sanitary sewer system and part of the Township's Consent Order Plan is to minimize the infiltration of water from unwanted sources.
In Upper St. Clair there are approximately 150 miles of public sanitary sewer lines, including over 5,000 sanitary manholes.
The Township Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the sanitary sewer system. These maintenance activities include:
- cleaning and flushing of sewer lines
- manhole maintenance such as cleaning and sealing
- dye testing of lines
- pump station maintenance
- using a sewer camera to detect problems
- and projects related to the Consent Order Plan
