CARDBOARD RECYCLING REMINDER

Cardboard placed at the curb for bi-weekly recycling collection should be flattened, bundled and no larger than 14" x 14". Cardboard placed at the curb larger than the stated size will be collected with trash.

The Township of Upper St. Clair has contracted the services of Waste Management of PA (1.800.866.4460) for the collection and processing of residential trash, recyclable materials, and yard waste/leaf material. (Adopted pursuant to Chapter 68 of the Upper St. Clair Township Code).

Trash collection is weekly on either Wednesday or Thursday. Recycling collection is every other week on your regular collection day (Wednesday or Thursday). Yard waste/leaf material collection will be on Saturdays in the Fall and Spring.

General Information

  • Residential trash, recycling, and yard waste/leaf material is to be placed within five (5) feet of the curb line by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Trash will be picked up any time after 6:00 a.m. There is no scheduled time for collection. All trash must be located in the same area.
  • Trash may be placed out the night before after 6:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. during winter months).
  • The contractor is not responsible to return for trash that has been set out late.
  • Legitimate trash misses will generally be picked up the following day after notification has been made to the Township (412.831.9000 ext.271) or Waste Management of PA (1.800.866.4460).
  • Residents are responsible to remove empty containers no later than 12:00 midnight on the day of collection.
  • Currently there are no limitations as to the amount of trash that can be placed at the curb for collection. If you have an excess amount of trash please notify Waste Management in advance or set out over a period of a few weeks. NOTE: Please refer to the Excluded Items list to ensure that you are not putting out items that will not be taken.
  • All bagged, boxed, bundled, etc. trash must be a manageable weight that one person can safely lift.
  • The contractor is not responsible for the collection of any item outlined in this brochure that is not properly prepared.

Waste baskets, bushel baskets, tubs, boxes, and other baskets will be at the curb at the risk of the homeowner. Caution children about leaving toys, bicycles, wagons, etc. at or near curb on collection day so they are not mistakenly removed.

The contractor is not responsible for the cleanup of trash/recyclables disturbed or scattered by weather, animals or other causes.

Residential Trash Collection

The contractor is required to provide weekly curbside collection of the following:

  • Residential Household Trash
  • Large household appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, refrigerators, freezers, (appliances containing Freon must have the Freon removed and appliance must be tagged prior to disposal).These items can also be dropped off for recycling on the designated e-cycling days.
  • Compactable furniture such as sofas, chairs, tables, beds, mattresses, box springs
  • Carpeting and padding cut in 3-4 foot lengths, rolled and securely tied
  • Dried or empty cans of paint (place newspaper, sand or kitty litter in can to absorb and dry out any wet paint; set cans out for collection with lids off). Cans of wet paint will not be picked up.
  • Bagged grass clippings

Residential Recycling Collection

The contractor is required to provide bi-weekly curbside collection of the following:

  • Aluminum, Bi-metal, and Steel Food Cans
  • #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 Plastics
  • Clear, Green, and Brown Glass Containers
  • Newsprint
  • Paper and Cardboard such as:
    Advertising Inserts
    Catalogs
    Computer Paper
    Coupons/Receipts
    Envelopes
    Junk Mail
    Magazines
    Paperback Books
    Paperboard Boxes
    Paper Bags
    Phone Books
    White Office Paper
    Cardboard - cut into squares no larger than than 14" x 14" and bundled

Food containers should be rinsed. Plastic and metal containers may be crushed to save space. Cardboard boxes should be flattened.

Recycling materials can be co-mingled in recycling containers. Excess may be placed in paper bags or in an additional container that has been marked with a Township recycling sticker. Recycling stickers are available at the Township Reception Desk or at the Library.

Only the above listed items are accepted for recycling by the township.

Each household has been provided with one 32-gallon recycling bin. Additional bins are available at the Public Works Department (1751 McLaughlin Run Road) for $13.00. Households still possessing the previously issued plastic recycling crates may continue to use them for excess recyclables or for newsprint. Recycling bins are to remain with the property when sold.

The Township annually receives a performance grant from the Commonwealth of PA based upon the amount of tonnage recycled during the previous year. Please do your part to help maximize this program.

E-cycling (Electronic Recycling) Program

Effective January 1, 2010, in accordance with Chapter 68 of the Township Code, the Township of Upper St. Clair requires the recycling of electronic equipment; these items are no longer permitted to be set out curbside.

The Township, in conjunction with JVS Environmental, will hold "e-cycling" events on the 2nd Saturday of each month in the Township parking lot near Clair's Kennel from 10 a.m. to 2 p. m.

A fee will be charged for televisions ($1 per inch of screen) and monitors ($5 each). Prices are subject to change.

Residents also have the option of taking advantage of e-cycling programs offered by numerous retail stores and other recycling organizations that collect electronics.

Residential Yard Debris/ Leaf Waste Collection

Pennsylvania's Recycling Act 101 restricts the placement of "yard waste/leaf material" in landfills.

To comply with the Act, the Township contracts for separate collection of leaves, plants, garden residue, chipped shrubbery, tree trimmings, and grass clippings, six (6) times in the Fall and once in the Spring on Saturdays.

During this separate collection, yard waste/leaf material must be placed in compostable paper bags. Limbs and branches are to be bundled and are not to exceed 3 inches in diameter and 48 inches long.

The contractor is not responsible for the cleanup of yard waste/leaf material disturbed or scattered by weather, animals or other causes.

Holiday Week Collection

Collection and disposal of trash will be delayed due to the following holidays unless the holiday falls on a weekend:

New Year's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

Trash collection will take place one day later than normal during a holiday week. If the holiday occurs on a weekend, no schedule change is made.

Severe Weather / Winter Storms

During inclement weather it may be necessary to delay or cancel trash/recycling collection. Refer to Cable 7 or the Township's Website (www.twpusc.org) for details.
