Pennsylvania Department Of Agriculture Announces Detection Of Emerald Ash Borer
Quarantine Imposed for Butler, Lawrence, Allegheny and Beaver Counties
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture issued a press release on June 27, 2007 (pdf) to alert area residents that the Emerald Ash Borer has been discovered in Cranberry Township and that all ash nursery stock and all hardwood firewood have been placed under quarantine.
"Pennsylvania's quarantine restricts the movement from the quarantine area of ash nursery stock, green lumber and any other ash material, including logs, stumps, roots and branches, and all wood chips. Due to the difficulty in distinguishing between species of hardwood firewood, all hardwood firewood-including ash, oak, maple and hickory-are considered quarantined."
People who suspect that they have seen Emerald Ash Borer should call the Department of Agriculture's toll-free hotline at 1-866-253-7189.
The Emerald Ash Borer web page, a "multistate effort Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, and Pennsylvania", has detailed information, including pictures, on identification, reporting, quarantines and other resources.
