LIVING IN UPPER ST. CLAIRHousehold Hazardous Waste CollectionPennsylvania residents will have an opportunity to safely and cost effectively dispose of HHW products at an upcoming collection sponsored by the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force, UPMC and other private and public sector partners. The next collection will take place on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Settler's Cabin Park wave pool parking lot in Allegheny County. Acceptable Items Include:Aerosol CansAutomotive Fluids (motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, kerosene, brake fluid) Batteries Chemistry Sets Gasoline and kerosene Compact fluorescent bulbs Household Cleaners (ammonia, drain openers, acid cleaners, oven cleaners) Mercury Paint Products (latex, oil based, alkyd based, arts/crafts chemicals, rust preservatives, creosote, water sealers, paint thinners, furniture strippers) Pesticides/Herbicides (rodent killers, insecticides, weed killers, mothballs, fertilizer) Photo Chemicals Pool Chemicals Link to map of Settler's Cabin Park on the Allegheny County website http://www.alleghenycounty.us/ parks/maps.aspx Call the PA Resources Council at 412.488.7452 or visit www.swpahhw.org for more information. Items NOT Accepted:ammunition and explosives,bulk waste, commercial and industrial waste, compressed gas cylinders (including propane tanks), drugs, flares, fluorescent tubes, medical waste (including needles), PCBs and dioxins, radioactive materials (including smoke detectors), and tires. A $2 (cash only) fee for each gallon of waste is charged. A certified contractor will process the hazardous wastes collected for proper disposal. Materials may be recycled, incinerated or safely buried in special landfills. Since the first collection took place in 2003, the Task Force has collected and safely disposed of more than 1.4 million pounds of household chemicals from over 14,000 Pennsylvania households. The Settlers Cabin Park collection is the first of several collections sponsored by the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force throughout the spring and summer.
