Youth Steering Committee

The Youth Steering Committee is a Community Action Group whose members are jointly appointed by the Township of Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners and the Board of School Directors. Youth Steering Committee members include adult residents, high school students, parents and representatives from both appointing boards. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month at the Community & Recreation Center, 1551 Mayview Rd., Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.

Next Meeting: Share the keys Virtual Program
The Youth Steering Committee of Upper St. Clair is offering families two opportunities to participate in Share the Keys, a 60- to 90-minute interactive orientation program for parents and their teen drivers. Families can register online for virtual programs at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 or 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 11.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that “motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens.” Research by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia found that parenting style has a significant impact on teen driver safety. Teens whose parents set rules and pay attention to their driving activities in a helpful, supportive way are half as likely to be involved in a crash.

According to the Share the Keys website, “Parents who set rules, offer support and monitor their teen’s driving can reduce their teen’s crash risk by as much as 50%.”

While the program is beneficial for all teen drivers, parents and teens experience the greatest benefit when participating prior to or during the driving permit phase. It provides valuable information, tools and resources that support the development of safe driving habits for life.
