Strength & Cardio Orientation

Orientations are available to the members* of the C&RC.  They are highly recommended for individuals who are new to exercise or unfamiliar with the types of equipment provided in our department.

With the guidance of a trainer, the member will learn the proper set up and exercise techniques needed to use the weight training machines, free weight equipment and the cardiovascular equipment.

In addition, upon request, the trainers will provide instructions on how to execute proper stretching and flexibility exercises, necessary during warm up and cool down phases of a workout.

Introduction to Strength Training

The Introduction to Strength Training Class is required for all youth ages 14-17 who are interested in using the free weights and weight machines in the fitness department.

This class places an emphasis on teaching youth how to become proficient in the application of proper strength training. With the guidance of the instructor, they will obtain knowledge and skills, which will enable them to build, execute and modify their training routines.

The instructor will not only focus on overall fitness and lifting form and technique, but will ensure the youth understands how to set and obtain realistic goals in a safe and effective manner.

Training should always be done for the right reasons. For youth, it is especially important to develop and fine tune basic motor skills, increase muscular strength, improve overall physical fitness, establish appropriate body composition, and for some enhance sports performance all while reducing risk of injury.

Visit the Fitness Control Desk or call 412-221-1099 (ext. 6180) for additional information or to schedule an appointment. There is no fee for this service. Children under the age of 14 are not eligible for this service and are not permitted to use the strength equipment in the fitness department.
