Fire Marshal

The Fire Marshal is responsible for the enforcement of the Township Fire Code. The complexity of the codes creates an atmosphere where compliance is best accomplished through engineering and education.

Every building or structure must be provided with means of egress and other safeguards appropriate to the individual building or structure with regard to the following: character of the occupancy, capabilities of the occupants, number of persons exposed, fire protection, height and type of the construction of the building or structure, and any other factors necessary to provide occupants with a reasonable degree of safety.

Code compliance for new and remodeled buildings begins with plan review and continues with progress inspections while the structure is being built. Upon occupancy of a structure, the Fire Marshal will inspect the building throughout its lifetime for compliance with the fire code.

Chapter 61 (PDF) of the Township Code entitled "Fire Prevention" contains the Fire Prevention standards for the Township.

The Fire Marshal also regulates:

  • open burning
  • posting of fire lanes
  • means of egress in structures
  • fire protection systems (fire sprinklers, alarms, commercial hood suppression systems, fire hydrants)
  • emergency planning and preparedness for assembly occupancies and schools
  • hazardous materials handling such as aerosol products, compressed gases, explosives, fireworks, flammable and combustible liquids, toxic materials, liquefied petroleum gas, and pesticides.

Fire and Burglar Alarms

Chapter 37 (PDF) of the Township Code regulates fire and burglar alarm systems in the Township. An Alarm Permit is required for alarm systems monitored by alarm companies and by connections direct to the Police Communication Center. It expires at the end of each calendar year.

Applications for Alarm Permits (PDF) may be downloaded or obtained from the Community Development office. Information obtained from the Alarm Permit applications assist the Police Department in responding to alarm activation.
