Swimming Pools

A building permit is required for the installation or alteration of a pool. The application is available at the Planning and Community Development offices or online.

Required are:

  • two sets of plans and specifications
  • a plot plan showing the location on the lot of the proposed pool along with all other buildings
  • fencing (existing and planned)
  • permit fee.

Additionally, an electric permit is required for any electrical work being done.

General Regulations

Chapter 116 of the Township Code addresses Swimming Pools.

All private swimming pools must be drained and maintained free of water or safely covered during any period when a property is vacant or unoccupied.

No body of water in the Township can be used for swimming which contains sewage, waste or other contamination or polluting ingredients rendering the water hazardous to the health, safety or welfare of the swimmer.

Before planning your new pool, contact the Zoning Administrator for additional guidelines.

Pool Enclosure

All pools (except wading pools of 24 inches or less) must be completely and continuously enclosed by a permanent durable wall, fence or barrier which is

  • no more than 6 feet
  • nor less than 4 feet high above grade
  • and constructed to have no opening larger than 2 inches in any dimension except for doors and gates
  • self-closing, self-latching gate - must swing away from pool

However, if a picket fence is erected or maintained, the horizontal dimension of any gap or opening shall not exceed 3 inches. All fences shall be constructed in accordance with applicable zoning requirements.
