2000 Executive Report on Deer Management
Controlled Archery Hunt

Deer/Vehicle Collisions | Fence Enclosure | Motion of Board of Commissioners

Signs | Strieter Lites | Wildlife Biologist | Conclusion

The basic purpose and philosophy of Whitetail Management Associates (WMA) is wildlife management in urban areas that are experiencing problems due to whitetail deer overpopulation. In 1998, WMA conducted a six-week hunt on the Boyce/Mayview Park property. This hunt was cut short because of the USC Petition Committee's success in stopping hunting on Township owned property. In May 1999, a referendum was passed allowing hunting to resume on Township owned property and beginning in the fall of 1999 through 2003 WMA has been conducting archery seasons every year. The results are summarized in the table below:

Included in the original motion was the consideration of the effectiveness of the controlled archery hunt. If the hunt was not deemed to be effective the Township should consider petitioning the PA Game Commission for petition to "cull" through sharpshooting.

The Township has seen a continued high number of deer/vehicle collisions and a significant deer population even after the controlled archery was put into effect. In light of the foregoing and because approximately three-quarters of the Township does not easily avail itself to the archery culling approach currently being used at Boyce-Mayview Park, staff recommends forwarding a petition to the Game Commission for approval of other culling options.
