Goal |
Actions Taken |
| 1. |
Implement controlled archery hunt on Township property |
ONGOING; Whitetail Management Associates have completed two years of hunting on the Boyce-Mayview property. To date the hunt has harvested 104 deer and is organizing for the 2000-2001 season. It is Staff's intention to petition the PA Game Commission regarding other culling options, including sharpshooting (as written in original motion). |
| 2. |
Test installation of Strieter-Lites |
ONGOING; Strieter-Lites were installed on .9 miles of State Route 19. There was no decrease in the number of deer/vehicle collisions and monitoring will continue. Moving lights to other high incident areas (i.e. Boyce Rd. or Mayview Road) may be a consideration if no impact is demonstrated throughout the next monitoring period. |
| 3. |
Engagement of a wildlife biologist |
ONGOING; Susan Bernatas, a wildlife biologist with AirScan, Inc. was selected to review and comment on various Township deer management issues. A report in conjunction with AirScan results is expected. The Township will also continue dialogue with Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick regarding latest developments in deer birth control applications. |
| 4. |
Deer population survey |
ONGOING; AirScan, Inc. completed the Township's first aerial infrared deer survey. 71 groups and 250 deer (pre-birth) were counted. Future census taking is anticipated. |
| 5. |
Investigation/installation of deer warning and crossing signs |
COMPLETE; New signage was placed on SR19. |
| 6. |
Development of communication program |
ONGOING; The Township website contains information regarding the Deer Management Plan, as well as, links to various sites of resident interest. |
| 7. |
Installation of a fence enclosure |
PENDING; The project is pending further discussion with the Township's wildlife biologist and the Parks and Recreation Board |
| 8. |
PZP deer birth control |
ONGOING; The Township has corresponded with the PA Game Commission indicating an interest in any discussion the Commission might entertain regarding initiation of a pilot program for whitetail deer birth control. The Township has also forwarded a video of the Dr. Kirkpatrick animal birth control presentation to the PA Game Commission. The Township is awaiting comment from Game Commission representatives. |
