Since 1994, the Upper St. Clair Police Department has been recording deer/vehicle collisions throughout the Township. Each vehicle and the deer involved are recorded as one collision. The following chart shows the number of deer/vehicle collisions 1994-1999 in the entire Township.
The next chart and data table will portray the month by month analysis of deer vehicle collisions from 1997-2000. This will encompass pre-hunt (1997), partial-hunt (1998), and full hunts (1999). This will allow, at least to a limited extent, assumptions to be made regarding the impact the controlled archery hunt is making on deer/vehicle collisions throughout the Township. There is a distinguishable pattern that deer/vehicle collisions follow annually. The numbers are typically moderate during the first four months of the year, hit their low points during the summer months and peak out during the remainder of the year. Studying the 2000 deer/vehicle collisions to date it is notable that accidents to date are more consistent with pre-1999 averages. For the months of January through May 1999 the average number of accidents was 11.2 per month, from January through May 2000 the average was 6.8 per month. Factors attributing to this result could be the impact of the archery hunts and/or the high number of deer collisions in the previous year.
In reviewing the January-May statistics for 1994-2000 in the following chart, a decline in deer vehicle collisions from 1999-2000 is seen. But while the 2000 numbers show a decline over the same period for 1999, the number of deer/vehicle collisions is somewhat higher than the pre-1999 average.
