Deer Management

Whitetail Deer Management

On August 3, 1998, after considerable public input, the Board of Commissioners adopted parameters for its Whitetail Deer Management Program. The program will employ many of the recommendations from an Ad Hoc Citizen Committee report on whitetail deer management strategies.

The Board's first action to initiate the program was to authorize a controlled archery hunt at Boyce/Mayview Park. Additional items in the program are:

  • In addition to archery hunting, the Township will evaluate all hunting or culling options allowed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
  • The details of the deer reduction program will be implemented through the Township Manager and appropriate staff.
  • The deer reduction program will be administered in the field by a selected outside group (i.e., Whitetail Management Associates).
  • The Township Manager and appropriate staff shall also implement as part of the Township's deer management program, the consideration of:

    1. Engagement of a wildlife biologist.
    2. Test installation of Strieter-Lites, investigation/installation of deer warning and crossing signs, and line-of-sight clearing.
    3. Installation of fence enclosure to evaluate deer exclusion effect on vegetation.
    4. Development of communication programs and library materials.

The Township Manager was also directed to explore with the State Game Commission a PZP deer birth control immunization pilot study and to develop for Board consideration appropriate Township Code revisions which may be necessary to implement the above measures.

The responsibility for review of the overall program effectiveness will be delegated to an existing Committee of the Board of Commissioners.
