Department ofAdministrationDeer ManagementAerial Deer Count 2001On March 14, 2001 AirScan Inc. of Titusville, Florida conducted a Township wide infrared aerial survey for the purpose of establishing a (pre-birth) deer census for the Township of Upper St. Clair. The estimated detection rate in these areas is at or about 90% of the deer actually in Upper St. Clair at the time of the flyover. Because the count was lower than the 2000 aerial count, extra time was spent searching the Township. For this census, most orbits were flown three or more times. The results of the infrared survey are as follows:
These numbers exclude repeat sightings, as well as, other objects determined not to be deer based on size, shape, and behavioral attributes. According to the PA Game Commission, it is difficult to determine a post-birth population without specific buck/doe ratios. However, state averages can allow for assumptions regarding post-birth deer populations. The Pennsylvania average is 1.1 fawns per female. |
