The Township of Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners recognized four members of the Upper St. Clair High School boys’ swim team in May. Josh Matheny, Jack Fitzpatrick, Reese Samuel and Ryan Senchyshak each received an official proclamation for their first place win as members of the 200-yard medley relay team at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships (PIAA).
Josh Matheny also received the proclamation for his first place in the 100-yard breaststroke in PIAA for the second straight year, setting National Federation of High Schools and PIAA records. Additionally, the Upper St. Clair High School sophomore placed fourth in the 200-yard IM with an All-America performance and a personal best time of 1:49.00 and was a member of the boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed sixth.
At the 2019 Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Class AAA Championships, Mr. Matheny won the gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke with a record setting time of 54.70, and captured two silver medals in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition, he placed third in the 200-yard IM.
Along with his first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, Jack Fitzpatrick placed second in the 100-yard backstroke, third in the 200-yard IM and sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. At the WPIAL Championships, the senior won the gold in the 100-yard backstroke with a record setting time of 48.20. He also captured three silver medals in the 200-yard IM, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Mr. Fitzpatrick plans to continue his swimming career at the University of Notre Dame in the fall.
Reese Samuel, who was also part of the first place 200-yard medley relay team, placed sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the PIAA Championships. At the WPIAL Championships, Mr. Samuel won the silver in the 200-yard medley relay and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. The senior will swim for Howard University next season.
Like his teammates, Ryan Senchyshak also won some other notable races. The freshman captured the silver in the 200-yard medley relay and eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay at the PIAA Championships. He placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle at the WPIAL Championships.
Dave Schraven coaches the Upper St. Clair boys’ swim team. Overall, the team achieved a second place finish at the WPIAL Championships and 5th place at the PIAA Championships.
