Commissioners Recognize Tri-Community South EMS for 40 Years of Service

Township of Upper St. Clair Commissioners recognized Tri-Community South Emergency Medical Services (TCS EMS) for 40 years of superior service. Commissioner Robert J. Orchowski presented TCS EMS with an official proclamation at January’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

TCS EMS initiated service on Dec. 31, 1977 at 11:00 p.m., establishing access to quality emergency care seven days a week, 24 hours a day to the residents of the Township of Upper St. Clair, the Municipality of Bethel Park and South Park Township.

After originally calling the Bethel Public Works complex home, the operation grew and expanded into its current state-of-the-art location at 5490 Progress Boulevard in Bethel Park.

During the last 40 years, TCS EMS has been led by only two directors, Mary Ann Scott, RN, BSN, and upon her retirement, current Director Nora Helfrich, RN, EMT-P. Under this leadership, TCS operates as a membership-driven organization necessitating no additional municipal tax support.

TCS EMS was the first EMS service in Allegheny County and second in Pennsylvania to be awarded the highest level of licensure one can obtain as an EMS Service, resulting in receiving recognition by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Service each of the three year cycles in 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015. In addition, TCS EMS was the first AHA training center in the nation to hold instructor-training courses for Heart Association Faculty.

Other recognitions TCS EMS has received includes Pennsylvania Department of Health’s EMS for Children highest master level, recognition for its research participation by the Center for Emergency Medicine’s Department of Research, achieving Excellence for Best Community AED program in North America, and Ambulance Service of the Year Award in 2007.

The highly skilled team of emergency medical technicians, paramedics and staff annually attend thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance and hone their lifesaving skills. Eleven TCS EMS employees have been recommended for and have received the Star of Life Award since the program’s implementation in 2007.

TCS EMS looks to the future by continuing public education to help improve the health of the community while providing commendable emergency service to the Township of Upper St. Clair, Municipality of Bethel Park and South Park Township.
